Navadurga

Durga Kund Temple (Kushmanda)

Durgakund Road, Bhelupur · beside the sacred tank

History & traditions

The eighteenth-century red Nagara-style temple and its tank form a single devotional precinct. Local accounts associate the temple with Rani Bhabani. In the Kashi Khanda, Durga and her attendant Shaktis guard the sacred city, and the text connects worship at the tank with the autumn Navratri pilgrimage. Today the fourth Navadurga stop is identified here with Kushmanda.

The Kashi portal describes a ten-armed image of Durga holding weapons. The clustered red spires and the tank help identify the temple precinct.

PILGRIMAGE CONTEXT

Navadurga

The Kashi Navadurga yatra associates each day of Navratri with a different local form of Durga. The Kashi Khanda also describes a family pilgrimage during autumn Navratri and singles out Durga Kund. If you are following the complete yatra, arrange the days around the festival calendar and ask for the local shrine names.
