History & traditions
Kotwal means the keeper or magistrate of the city. In Kashi’s pilgrimage tradition, that title belongs to Kaal Bhairav. Worshippers may tie a Bhairav Raksha Sutra, a protective thread, as an expression of devotion. Kaal Bhairav is honoured separately from the eight directional guardians named in the Kashi Khanda.
