Panchganga Ghat · Ratan Phatak, Ghasi Tola, K 22/33

History & traditions

The Kashi Khanda tells how Vishnu grants the sage Agnibindu a lasting presence at Panchanada, the sacred meeting of five streams associated with Panchganga Ghat. The earlier, larger temple stood in the area now associated with the Alamgir Mosque. The present Bindu Madhav shrine continues the tradition in a smaller hall above the ghat. The temple’s own site records Kartik observances and gives its Ghasi Tola address.

PILGRIMAGE CONTEXT

Madhava

Madhava is a name of Vishnu. In the Kashi Khanda, Bindu Madhava describes to Agnibindu forms of Vishnu associated with particular tirthas, or sacred sites. Their names may preserve a connection to a ghat, well or old bathing place, while the present worship site can be inside a different host shrine.
