History & traditions

The ascetic form of Durga is honoured on the second day of Navratri. Ask for Chhoti Durga near Durga Ghat, where the river steps and upper lanes provide different approaches.

Brahmacharini represents the goddess during her period of austerity. In Kashi the second-day shrine is known locally as Chhoti Durga. The smaller Kharva Narasimha image is recorded in the Durga Ghat area and has its own house reference.

PILGRIMAGE CONTEXT

Navadurga

The Kashi Navadurga yatra associates each day of Navratri with a different local form of Durga. The Kashi Khanda also describes a family pilgrimage during autumn Navratri and singles out Durga Kund. If you are following the complete yatra, arrange the days around the festival calendar and ask for the local shrine names.
