History & traditions
Sankatha is associated with relief from difficulty. The district’s temple guide records a large lion figure in the precinct and nearby shrines to the nine planets. The old-city shrine inventory records Vindhyavasini and Achanaka in nearby lanes, which explains why pilgrims may ask for more than one Devi image in the same outing.
Deity & sacred image
- Deity or sacred figure
- Devi Sankatha, invoked in times of difficulty

PILGRIMAGE CONTEXT
Other Devi shrines
Kashi’s goddess shrines include neighbourhood guardians, forms of Chandi, and Matrikas or mother goddesses. The Kashi Khanda describes Durga protecting the city with a wider group of Shaktis. This makes the named precinct important when different forms are worshipped in adjoining lanes or within the same temple.
