History & traditions
The temple trust dates Ahilyabai Holkar’s present shrine to 1780 and the Naubatkhana, a ceremonial gateway for musicians, to 1785. The gold donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh explains why the shrine is also known as the Golden Temple. The Jyotirlinga is the focus of worship, while the surrounding lanes contain smaller shrines such as Annapurna and Dhundiraj Ganesh.
