History & traditions
Sarnath’s monuments tell different parts of its history. The stupa and excavated monasteries mark the archaeological site, while the museum keeps objects found there, including Ashoka’s Lion Capital. The nearby Mulagandhakuti Vihara is a modern Buddhist place of worship. The Maha Bodhi Society records its opening in 1931 and its association with Anagarika Dharmapala.
What to see
Look for the carved lower stonework of Dhamek Stupa. The nearby archaeological museum houses Ashoka’s Lion Capital, and Mulagandha Kuti Vihar is a separate place of worship.
